get the look: nyfw 2017

Good morning! I wanted to start a new series today, so that I can regularly share some outfit inspiration here on the blog (for those of you not subscribed to The Monthly Array!). NYFW has just passed us by, so there's a lot of street style floating around the web. This Instagram caught my attention in a real way the other day:

These ladies look fresh to death, and yet, I feel like their outfits can be easily digested and broken down. So many great details, so much originality, and though it looks trendy, it's really made up of so many staples!

Here's my take on the outfits:

These outfits make me so happy. Cozy, functional, really fun. You could swap a neutral pleated skirt and bomber jacket / blazer here for a look that's a little less extra. Also...white tights, who knew? My 6 year old self would be impressed.

Have a great day!

get the look :: denim coat

7cd0343f06863881ffa39eca68315118 Jean jackets, beware: you're on the way out.

Not only because it's getting cold around these parts, but because this Fall is playing host to a new denim trend: coats. Not jackets, but an entire outerwear situation fashioned out of denim. I started noticing this trend when I peeped Marques Almeida's collection, and, as trends are wont to do, it has trickled its way down into the hands of some of our favorite brands and retailers.

This Fall, I dare you to throw away tuck your North Face into the back of your closet and familiarize yourself with some denim amazingness:

get the look: tomboy

Friends, I was up until 3am with an itchy, itchy dog last night. Luckily, he is sleeping soundly right now, and I hope he stays that way for a bit longer while this coffee I'm drinking revives me. You know what else revives me? A good dose of inspiration. My good friends know that I have (and always have had) a huge crush on Kristen Stewart. In college, I had a picture of her on my dorm room wall; I've always loved her laid back style and think she's really pretty. Well, I stumbled upon her stylist's Instagram account the other day, and sort of went down a sartorial rabbit hole. Exhibit A:

This look made me so happy. It's not even necessarily something I'd wear, but I just love it. I love that the entire look is boxy and oversized, yet a tiny bit sexy, too. I love that 2 out of the three pieces she's wearing can easily make the switch from summer to fall. I also love that she gives zero fucks in these pictures.

Fashion is not literal. It's interpretive and ever-changing and if you deem something stylish then that's all you need to be stylish. Fashion is bigger than bloggers and Pinterest - I challenge you to get inspired anywhere and everywhere. Here's my take on the look:

So simple, so easy! How cute would this bracelet be with the ensemble? Right?

get the look: kendall jenner

As I've mentioned before, my style sensibility and inspiration typically comes from outside myself. For as long as I've had eyes, I've been hyper observant. Not that I don't like to put my own spin on things by using my noggin, but I'm definitely a visual learner in every sense of the word. 29C266CD00000578-3130798-image-m-47_1434677396417

This outfit spoke to me the other day. Sure, Kendall Jenner looks great in everything, but it takes the right hardware to make jeans and a t-shirt look sexy. And I don't mean her body, I mean the quality of the clothes on her back. The outfit is simple, but finding the right fit for your body is like finding the right key for a lock - once you find it, you're in.

Luckily, a deep V-neck works great for most folks. If you have tiny boobs, it shows off your décolletage, if you have big boobs, self explanatory. Wearing a great tee the right way is about showing off the right assets, and leaving the others behind. For me, I'm self conscious about my tummy, so I make sure it's nice and long and loose at the bottom and has a fun scoop neck or v-neck on top. If you're good with your stomach, wear a cropped tee or tuck it in like Kendall is doing here. You feel me?

get the look: the olsen twins

Are there two more exquisitely fashionable humans on the planet than Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen? If there are, I'd be hard pressed to find them. There are pictures of the duo from 2008, wearing what all of us are just realizing is an incredible look today, 7 years later. I don't know how they do what they do, BUT! I do know how to mimic it. Earlier this week, I came across this picture:

Olsens-Anonymous-Blog-Style-Fashion-Get-The-Look-Elizabeth-And-James-Nirvana-Was-The-Best-Selling-Fragrance-Of-2014-Sephora-Elle-MagazineAnd I just said, "...damn." So simple yet so, so on point. This, right here, is a case in and of itself for investing in high quality, basic pieces. So, not OLSEN high quality - I'm sure these outfits are a few thousand each - but great, wearable pieces that elevate your wardrobe.

Here's my take on their outfits:

4_23_15_GTL_olsens

// Mary Kate // blazer (less expensive option here) // boots (less expensive option here)

// jeans //

// Ashley // sweater (less expensive option here) // loafers (other option) // jeans //

I know this palette is a little moody for this time of year - but take the pieces out of their respective outfits and they can be mixed and matched for any season, for all time. So what makes these outfits so special (aside from the quality)? Goodness, I'm so happy you asked! The key to these pieces are as follows:

Blazer: The fit is long, slim and therefore unexpected. It wears almost like a mini dress. Maybe it could be worn as a mini dress!

Boots: Super flat, elongated boot. Again, unexpected, but that's not the key. The key to these is the snake embossing. Can you say delicious? No need for accessories with these boots.

Loafers: Embossing FTW! Or, on second glance, maybe these are just a smooth patent leather. Either way, dropping that sheen into the otherwise matte outfit is like a big ol', sexy wink.

Sweater: It's cashmere, there's nothing else to say, really. Get you some.

Jeans: Dark grey is the new black, I think? And the fit is so key. Please, please, please buy jeans based on their fit before you buy them for any other reason.

I feel so much BETTER now that we unpacked these outfits. Let's go, Thursday!
