my go-to summer outfit

Morning, friends! Welcome to our new digs! Court and I have been slowly but surely working ourselves up to a makeover for a couple months now, and it's finally coming together! Still a few things to work out, but we're on the way! Hope you like it... If you live in New York, you got smacked in the face with full on summer this weekend. As always, I was grossly unprepared. I can't tan, so I'm never as excited for summer as you guys. But if I was, say, really excited and really prepared…these are the things I would put in my closet and never. take. off. all summer long:

1. The Perfect Tee

If you haven't invested in a comfy, looks good with everything tee, I highly suggest that be put on the docket this summer. In fall and winter, we have all this time to layer our outfit, so it's okay to experiment a little more. In summer, especially in NY, the fewer articles of clothing, the better…so you gotta get it right. I've mentioned before that my favorite is this one by Alexander Wang, but you can't go wrong with J. Crew, as well as Everlane. Bonus points for stripes.

2. Cutoffs

Please don't go out and buy something like this. I mean, do, if you have the dough, but also just try something for me. Go to your closet now and find a pair of jeans that you never wear. Everyone has them, and I know you've been putting off getting rid of them. Check it out:

I brought these ripped capris to Spain in 2006 when I spent a summer abroad. That trip was not a good example of any sartorial prowess that I might possess. In any case, many Spanish people laughed at my pants (why would she cut holes in her pants on purpose…stupid American), and I tend to agree with them. I once wore these capris with Prada loafers…just…not a good look.

I made these babies into cut offs years ago and I constantly get compliments. So get cuttin', friends. By the way, I took this picture in line at Starbucks yesterday, but if you follow us on Instagram @littleredswell, there's a better shot.

3. Birkenstocks

Growing up, my sister was in high school during the Birkenstock craze, when boys would wear them with white hats and tie dyed tees… and we used to make fun of them! Now, they've been all I could think about. I mentioned to someone I know that I wanted to purchase them, and the response was, "NO! They're lesbian shoes!" So naturally I bought them, and have been wearing them on repeat (peat peat peat peat). YOU CAN'T PIGEON HOLE ME, NARROW MINDED BIRKENSTOCK HATER! I got mine from ASOS for $93, (DSW has them for $89 but they were sold out in my size), and here are a few other covetable styles: one, two, three.

FIVER: instant, cheaper, faster, ideal

Good morning, lovely people! How was everyone’s weekend? Mine was definitely of a superior quality. Raven and I enjoyed some QT with his brothers and Dad as a bit of an early birthday celebration!

One activity that I enjoy, regardless of weekend or weekday (hopefully my boss is not reading this!), is shopping online. Sure, I miss the days of my mom dropping me and a friend off at the mall with a specified pick-up time and place, and nowadays I enjoy the occasional trip to H&M, Bloomingdales, etc, but really, I mostly just shop online. It’s instant, it’s cheaper, it’s faster, and when you are borderline reclusive like myself, it’s absolutely ideal.

If you are not into Instant, Cheaper, Faster, Ideal (it’s the remix of Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger) please allow yourself to be persuaded by my five favorite online retailers...

1. Shopbop

My tried and true, absolute favorite place to shop online, Shopbop is a wonder of the world wide web and I am always astonished when I mention this to friends and they have no idea what I’m talking about! At first glance you’re probably saying, thanks Allie, I’m now face to face with a nearly $1700 coat that is twice my monthly rent...I hate you. I know, I hate me too. Here’s what’s great about Shopbop though...near constant sales, items for every price point, free shipping and free returns (always!), and superior customer service.

2. ASOS

H&M and Forever 21, who needs ya? I’ve been shopping at ASOS since college. Originally it started out as a website with knock offs of designer duds worn by celebs, hence the name ASOS (As Seen On Screen). Now they’ve got that formula down pat, but have expanded inventory and you can basically find anything and everything at very affordable prices. That $1700 coat above? Not an exact match, but darn close; lookie what I found.

3. Etsy

I remember years ago when my incredibly crafty SIL turned me on to this amazing website. The premise and tagline are one in the same: Your place to buy all things handmade, vintage, and supplies. This is my source for treasures for my home as well as one of a kind gifts for loved ones. My vintage coffee table was a steal from here, as well as a custom painting for my brother’s wedding, and handmade greeting cards for my Mom. And it just feels good to support real, small businesses.

4. Biscuit Home

Speaking of small business, man am I glad this shop exists. The brainchild of my favorite blogger, Bailey McCarthy (Peppermint Bliss), Biscuit was created out of a need for beautiful yet affordable bedding. And satisfy that need she did. The prints are refreshingly gorgeous, and they feel wonderful! I never realized that threadcount made a difference, and I am sorry that I waited this long to find out. Their flagship store of the same name is in Houston, but if you’re not going deep in the heart of Texas anytime soon, their online shop boasts plenty of decor items for the home, furniture, jewelry - everything unique and special.

5. Google

I always joke that if I had my druthers, I would love to be a professional googler. My friends and family frequently reach out for help finding certain items (clothes, products, furniture, etc), and I always jump at the chance! Maybe it was my summer as a production intern on a film set that sparked this love affair with internet searches, but I remember being delighted when presented with the challenge to find a “very comfortable but easily stowable cot for a man who is well over 6 feet tall.” Well, I crushed that challenge. To this day, whenever I find something that I want but either a) it’s sold out or b) it’s financially unattainable, I usually just Google it! Obviously this is not earth shattering information to some/most of you. But again, I’m surprised at how many people don’t think of it. The search can be as easy as the item name of a particular product, or you can get really creative. That jacket above? I searched for “women’s plaid jacket”, and when I came up empty-handed, “women’s plaid coat red.” A few clicks later, I found this beauty.

style philosophy: life is about the add-ons

I could live out the rest of my days in a uniform of nothing but a great pair of jeans and a quality tee shirt. If I had to sum up my style philosophy, it would be to start with a great base and add on from there.

My eye always goes to add ons. I love the make your own salad spots and self serve frozen yogurt shops that are seemingly ubiquitous in NYC. My bed is a veritable palace of pillows, when in reality, Raven and I only sleep with one respective pillow each. When it comes to my choices in fashion, I am no different. Whether browsing online or shopping in store, I almost always head straight for the add ons. Blazers, cardigans, shoes, scarves, belts, jewelry...you get the idea. It doesn’t matter if my shopping list is one line item only- I will inevitably drift to the add ons.

And why not? One could conceivably wear the exact same base 3 nights in a row, and with a little imagination and the right add ons, have a completely different look every time. Here, I’ll show you below...these are almost identical versions of my outfits for Thursday, Friday and Saturday last weekend (which included 2 birthdays and a fantastic day trip).

red’s tip: my absolute favorite tees are by Alexander Wang. Classic and flattering on anyone, they make for a great base. They aren’t cheap but they definitely last.
