how to: identify classics you already own

View More: http://ashley-caroline.pass.us/littleredswellbranding Almost daily on the internet, one could find any number of articles about classic pieces (or as my SIL calls them, HQB's - high quality basics) that every woman should own.

These articles are important, don't get me wrong! But, as with any exercise, you have to start by looking in before you can look outward (can I get an Amen??). So, before you start trolling the web for white button downs and blue blazers, let's scope out what you're already workin' with.

1. Don't judge your wardrobe. So many times with clients I hear "I know, I know, I don't even know why I own that..." before I even say anything. Hold up a sec, friend! Quit doling out judgement and put on your thinking cap. The good stuff is in there, you just haven't thought of it yet. Obvious: the  Polo button down from HS with pit stains. Yes, it's RL, and yes, it gets donated. Not so obvious: that weird tunic that you love but have no idea how to wear. Put it on, and start imagining what it would look like if it were shorter, tighter, without that appliqué rose. Got it? Now put it in the save pile and take it to be altered stat.

2. Classics don't have to be black and white (PUN). Though black and white do go with everything, don't feel the need to rid your closet of every other color. Those silk jammie pants from a couple years ago work great with a chambray button down, at the beach, and with some heels for going out. They're patterned and loud, and that's a good thing.

3. Your jewelry is part of your closet, too. You don't need 75 H&M statement necklaces. What do you wear out of those 75? What did you wear in the last month? Keep those, and then ask yourself if any of your friends would wear what you plan on selling / donating. Every time I clean out my closet, I invariably find stuff that my best friend Gill would love. I've been right every time (she has the most wonderfully imaginative sense of style ever).

4. No, you don't need an LBD. If you're an actress, you might not ever wear a blazer. A blazer is a classic piece of clothing, but don't get one just because every article aimed at the corporate gal says you need it. If it makes more sense for you to invest in an amazing pair of heels that you can wear to auditions, then do that. Don't let society pigeon hole you (steps off soap box).

5. Less is more. Build your closet. As with anything, stay true to your style. If you're a t-shirt and jeans kind of gal, get some amazing Rag & Bone denim. If you wear dresses every day, hit up a department store and treat yourself. The goal is to invest in pieces that you'll still wear in 10 years, or will eventually be stolen out of your closet by a daughter, son, niece or nephew.

FIVER: how to get creative with your wardrobe

In honor of From Scratch for 50 days: A Creativity Challenge, I wanted to talk about my 5 favorite ways to get creative with my outfit.  The word creativity can be kind of intimidating, but our challenge isn't to become the next Shakespeare, write an entire album or take up ballet in 50 days (though I'd like to pick your brain if you are doing that).  Our challenge is to start something new, find something out about yourself, or just get a little perspective each day.  So let's take something as simple as the shirt on our back and make it new... 1. Try new combinations of your favorite pieces.

Sometimes I get stuck in a rut- maybe it's the week I'm having, maybe I'm just a little lazy, but I occasionally find myself wearing the exact same pant and shirt combos over and over and over. Forget the people who have to look at me- I'M bored!  I always feel a little more awake and a little more creative when I find a "new" outfit in my existing wardrobe.  Maybe it's just a different button-down with the same pair of pants I wore last week, but if I've never tried it, it's new!  Need a little inspiration?  Here's my take on one shirt, three ways.

2. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize.

If I have fashion writer's block, I open up my jewelry box and look through everything.  Or I try on four different pairs of shoes.  Or I just throw on a belt.  Whatever you're wearing, it always becomes next level when you add a great accessory (or as I like to call them…add on's).  Here, here, and here are a couple I'm coveting right now.

3. Layer.

Oh this is just the BEST and so easy it's almost cheating.  As I've talked about time and time again, I love nothing more than throwing on a vest, sweater, or blazer to finish my look.  The same black dress looks completely different with a jean jacket, cardigan, or faux fur vest.

4. A little lipstick never hurt anyone.

I can't tell you how many times I've worn my go-to outfit and just slapped on some lipstick to make it a little different.  Talk about fashion on a budget!

5. When in doubt: black.

Classic, flattering on everyone, looks good with every aforementioned suggestion.

shopping in your own closet

Welcome to little red's well!

What is it about fall that makes everyone just want to start fresh?  I may be 28, but every year at the end of August/start of September, without fail, I'm on the hunt for a new back-to-school wardrobe.

Unfortunately we don't always have the time, or more importantly the funds, to spring for a new wardrobe every year.

So it got me thinking...

The lovely Court just organized her closet, and I thought it would be fun to go through her clothes and put together a few outfits that she normally wouldn't wear.

The upside? Totally revamped wardrobe.  Added bonus? $0 budget.  We did this for FREE with 1 hour of time.  All clothes, shoes and accessories belong to Court and all of the outfits we came up with received what we like to call the PSA (partner seal of approval!) from her husband, Craig (who happens to be multi-talented and took the incredible photos you see below).

Outfit 1: Casual

look 1

There is ALWAYS room for denim on denim, and luckily you can find an inexpensive chambray button down just about anywhere.  We styled up this simple outfit, perfect for running errands, with one of Courtney's silk scarves repurposed as a belt.  My one recommendation to take this outfit from late summer to full on fall appropriate is a pair of simple black flats.  We realized while styling this shoot that Court doesn't own any ballet flats! Here are a couple of cheap pairs she could spring for: ASOS LAILA Ballet Flat $18.56 , London Rebel Studded Ballet Flat $21.10

Outfit 2: Day to Night Out

look 2

Every New Yorker knows it's a pain to run home and change for a night out after work.  Here we took that same chambray shirt from the first look and put it under a summery dress with black tights and casual boots.  With this outfit Courtney can go from an audition, to work, and out with friends without having to bring extra clothes.

Outfit 3: Date Night

look 3

Most likely our significant others don't really mind seeing that same LBD every date night (or in my case, same flannel button down and black skinny jeans, but I digress), but sometimes it's nice to switch it up.  Pairing a boxy shift dress with jeggings and fun heels is unexpected and playful, and the brooch adds the right amount of accessory.  No muss, no fuss, this outfit is perfect for dinner and drinks.

Outfit 4: Formal

Speaking of that Little Black Dress, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it!  The key is finding a piece that fits you properly, and knowing how to style it.  Not that anything looks bad on Court, but she looks like a knock out in this dress, so my work was basically done.  Normally she said she would pair this with black pumps, but we chose a nude peep toe that elongates her leg.  One great bracelet to accessorize, and that's it!  It stands on its own.  With the chilly weather, she'll probably need something to keep her warm.  I myself am not a fan of wearing pashminas instead of outerwear to formal events.  Friends, that is not going to do anything to keep you warm!  My go to is a Burberry jean jacket, but with Courtney's outfit, here are a couple fun/transitional options for her: River Island Draped Shearling Jacket $118.13 , ASOS Blazer in Crochet Lace $92.82
