color fatigue

That title, right? I can't take credit for it, it's part of a question submitted to me (by my ingenious friend Courtney) last week before The Brass Owl spring trend workshop. The question, and the subsequent answer, were so exciting to me that I knew I wanted to devote today's post to the subject. In case you missed it on FB, Courtney's question was as follows:

"I never have the right transitional outfits in the spring, I'm either too cold or too warm and my palette is still pretty gray/black. What's the best outfit to conquer temperature confusion and winter color fatigue?"

That, right there, is some JUICE. A helluva question, and I'll be honest I had to think about my answer. But here goes.

We spend 3-4 months of the year stuffing our down coats like turkeys, piling on every bit of warmth we can imagine, wearing muted tones and hoping against hope that snow boots go with everything. This fatigue Courtney mentions is two-fold. We're tired of the stuffing, and we forget what it's like to see the sun shine - even when it comes to our wardrobe. By the time winter passes us by, we're so used to covering ourselves up that we almost forget what it feels like to have the sun on our face and neck. So sometimes we get a little confused. We go crazy and wear a floral dress without tights when it's 55, or decide it's time to break out our pastel jeans and sandals. We feel weird, and we should.

Warm weather doesn't mean we have to go from one extreme (stuffed turkeys) to another (pattern and color crazed - and probably still cold). Take it easy, and start small.

1. Switch out your down coat for a wool one. Remember that awesome super sale pick you scooped up at the end of the fall season? Now is the time. Wool coats, come out. Pea coats, trenches, lined waxed jackets, faux fur. Make no mistake, we still need coats right now, we just do not need the big guns. Bring out the medium guns.

2. You still need to layer. Everyone is rolling their eyes, I know. But you can't go out without a sweater, cardigan, or some sort of layer between you and your newly dusted off spring transitional coat. Bring a larger bag and stuff it in there if you overheat, which is unlikely because the high's are in the low 50's right now.

3. Neutral color. While we're still warming up our color muscles, go easy on yourself and do some classic neutrals (which, by the way, are super in for spring!). Swap out those black jeans for blue jeans to keep the transition going. Add a dainty piece of jewelry and a bold lip. Et voila!

FIVER: items to pull out of storage now

Well, so much for the chill in the air, yeah? It's going to be in the 80s and 90s all week this week...I'm not thrilled, but, this is good opportunity to start thinking about the ways we can blend our summer and fall items in the most awesome way.  (Also good luck to everyone who started school today! I told the kids I babysit for that I finished ALL my school and it blew their mind.) On a closet makeover last week (photos to come soon, it was...epic), we focused solely on summer stuff, and we briefly touched on pieces to start layering into my client's existing summer wardrobe to take her to fall.

Listen, I know I'm talking a LOT about transitioning seasons. It's just so satisfying to me, so bear with me.

If you live in NYC and your closet is the size of a large froyo container, here are 5 items to pull out of fall storage that you will definitely use for the next couple weeks:

1. Handbag: I've been wearing my fall handbag for weeks. Dark green seems so clearly autumnal, and yet, here I am, defiantly wearing it around town with white shorts. I'm being facetious when I say defiant, but it's definitely more of a fall color. Who cares!? Bring out that black leather bag, trade in that cotton tote for a more structured piece. The time is now!

2.  Closed-Toe Shoes: Let's do it. Our toes will thank us. Mine are looking ready to go into hibernation, and I see no need to deny them. Remember, there are no rules. Go ahead, wear suede booties with shorts, patent leather or metallic loafers with white pants. In fact, if you do, send me a pic, because respect.

3. Lightweight Button Down: Start the layering. Unabashedly. All of your offices are freezing - I know this. Silky top, button down. Me likey.

4. Plaid: Plaid is a year round endeavor for me, but I know there are those of us who pair it only with fall like pb&j. Bring it out, wear it with a mini skirt, tie it around your waist.

5. Outerwear: Ditch. The. Denim. Give it a little break. No more jean jackets. I want to see blazers! Vests! Give me give me.

Wow, I sound like a drug addict. It's true, I need my fall fix. Please, friends, take some pictures this week and tag me @littleredswell because I want to see your beautiful outfits.

get the look: transitional

688a420286647311ff0226b1adfdefc7 I came across this lovely pin yesterday and it struck me that we need to start talking about transitional clothing. Clothes that take you from summer to fall. This is probably my favorite way to dress, because I love layers so much. I love this lightweight dress, here doing its job of keeping the wearer cool on a hot day. Picture it with some tights and boots this fall. Me likey. Here's my take:

transitional

summer: hat // clutch // sandals

fall: scarf // bag // boots // tights (not pictured)

dress: option 1 // option 2

Those boots are at the top of my wish list.

xo!

i been thinkin'...

I had planned all week to write a serious, introspective post for you all.  But friends, it's Friday! And we ain't goin' out like that. Especially because today all SORTS of interwebs goodness smacked me straight across my freckled mug.

Stuff like this:

I always stop to look at photos of Jessica Biel for two reasons:

1. She stole my husband (I can't talk about it).

2.  Her hair!  On another level these past couple years.

The third reason I had to take another look at this picture is that plaid dress.  Actually, I'm down with her whole outfit (talk about add ons!). And since we're not all millionaires like Mrs. Timberlake, you'll be happy to know that this dress is transitional. Today (in the frigid climes) I'd wear it with booties, black tights, and this coat:

This summer, when it's 90, I'll wear it with espadrilles and my hair like this:

You get the idea.

By the way, I saw this picture on one of my favorite websites ever, Who What Wear. Check it out.

Yes, here at LRW we are coming around to the idea of warmer weather.

Do tell, are you looking forward to spring and summer?
